The Tax Reform Act of 2010 which was enacted December 17, 2010 made the most significant changes in rates and exemptions for the federal estate, gift and generation skipping tax since the last major tax relief bills enacted in 2001 and 2003-and-like the earlier legislation, the new law contains a broad sunset provision. This program will provide an overview of the law, discuss the impact of the Act on estates of decedents dying in 2010, the increased importance of state taxes under the 2010 Act and offer suggestions for estate, gift and GST planning opportunities for 2011 and 2012, including a review of the new concept of "Portability" of the estate tax exemption between spouses.
