Licensing, Naming Rights & Sponsorship Agreements in the Sports & Entertainment Industries

March 13, 2012

This program will focus on licensing, naming rights, sponsorship, and related agreements. A panel experienced in negotiating and drafting license agreements will examine two principle areas: an overview of the rights that are available and a summary of the basic deal points that practitioners should consider. The panel will discuss the various types of rights available, such as sports league and team logos, names, and colors; player/celebrity names and likenesses; arena/stadium and event naming rights and signage; and sponsorship agreements for the right to associate a product with a league, team, or event. The panel will also explore the potential sources of rights in the sports and entertainment industries. Main deal points that are to be negotiated with respect to the various agreements will also be identified and discussed. Topics will include royalty rate, geographic scope of the license, marks licensed, product submission and quality control issues, minimum guarantees, advertising requirements, and exclusivity. General negotiation strategies and important considerations in negotiating and drafting agreements in the area will also be examined
