The National Labor Relations Act (NLRA) governs labor-management relations in the private sector and extends certain rights to collective action among employees, whether or not unionized. The NLRA can overlap Title 7 of the Civil Rights Act and other anti-discrimination statutes, particularly where grievance-arbitration clauses commonly contained in collective bargaining agreements purport to require arbitration of statutory claims under the agreement. This program is designed (1) to provide a basic overview of the NLRA and the processes through which the NLRB and its General Counsel (GC) administer the statute; and, (2) to review recent developments and issues before the NLRB. It will be presented through a panel composed of representatives of the New York City Regional Office of the NLRB, representatives from the union and management bars and members of the Labor and Employment Law Committee.
