Reinventing Your Practice for Today's Market. (Virtual Law Firms & Telecommuting)

March 22, 2012

Solo practitioners and small firms often operate on a shoe-string budget and work out of a home office or in a virtual office. Others maintain a virtual office simply as a conscious choice to reduce costs and maximize profits. As a result, firm partners and employees, including support staff, have the option of telecommuting either on a full time or part time basis. Before setting up a virtual office or implementing a telecommuting option there are practical, legal, ethical and tax issues that lawyers should be aware of and consider. This program will examine the following topics: the basics of how to start a virtual law firm; whether and how to use social media; the ethical issues relating to virtual offices and telecommuting; billing, fees and collection; tax issues concerning virtual offices and employing telecommuters; and employment/labor issues with telecommuting and having a virtual assistant. These issues and more will be discussed at this program by panelists who have their own solo or small firm practice.
